At the instigation of the four LHC experiments, the Joint Controls Project was set up at the end of December,1997. The document setting out the project proposal may be found here. Given the increasing constraints on manpower, as well as the evident similarity in technical requirements for controls amongst the experiments, the project should enable more efficient use of resources to be made. The background, objectives, and other details of the project may be found in the Initial Project Plan and a report on the first phase of the project is available at the report in the document Initial Phase.

After its first two years of operation, a review of the project took place which led to a clarification of reporting lines and a Revised Mandate. Day-to-day decisions are taken taken by the Project Leader in collaboration with an Executive Board which meets bi-weekly and includes the experiments' Controls Co-ordinators. The Project Leader reports to a the Controls Co-ordination Board (CCB), previously known as the Steering Group, which meets quarterly and must approve the programme of work as well as identify and make available the necessary resources.

The people working on the project form a Project Team which holds bi-weekly meetings, the Minutes of which may be found by following the appropriate hypertext links. The current planning is detail in the Programme Plan and supported by an accompanying Gantt chart. This provides an overview of the programme of work, and the details may be found below sub-projects. A JCOP Support and Maintenance Concept has been defined and is currently under review.

The Joint Controls Project has organised 3 workshops;

JCOP Workshop-3 CERN on 5-6 June 2002
JCOP Workshop-2 CERN on 6-7-8 September 1999
JCOP Workshop-1 CERN on 3-4-5 June 1998

The management of the project is carried out by the Project Leader who reports to a CCB which meets at least quarterly. The programme of work must be approved by the CCB up which must identify and make available the necessary resources. Day-to-day decisions are made by an Executive Board, chaired by the Project Leader, and composed of the experiments’ Controls Coordinators and a representative of each sup-port group involved (until now, IT/CO and PH-ESS).
